in government class we had to write a letter to a congressman. so i waited untill the night before and threw it togather it 10 before my curfew. i got it back a week later after my teacher ranted and raved about it and i was quite suprised considering how little effort i put into it. and so now i've decided to send it.

Representative Marsico:
At the age of 16 i have been working for the past ten months. At the end of every two weeks I receive a pay check, and at the very bottom of the check there is a space for "total deductions". Though this amount never reaches more that $60 it seems quite contrdictory to make a 16 year old pay taxes. If I remember correctly, a citizen must be 21 to drink, 18 to buy cigarettes, 18 to buy a lottery ticket, 18 to get a peircing or tattoo without parent signature, 18 to enter any adult store, but most of all 18 to vote. (But one will never be too young to be taxed.) It is my understanding that in a free, representative democracy everyone is equal and everyone deserves a chance to be represented in congress. With this in mind I am reminded of events such as the Revolutionary War. Colonist were not being represented in congress though they paid taxes. It seems to be that repition of this has occured in modern day, taxation without representation.
However, there is another way to solve this problem other than not taxing citizens until they are 18. The solution simply is allowing anyone who is taxed to vote. I know this would be a radical idea to many, considering how teenagers have aquired the terms lazy, irresponsible, and immature, but in a state of democratic representation, it is essential.
Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter.
